Spotted! Scion FR S Prototype Hits the Road for Testing

Thanks to the concept that was shown at the New York auto show earlier this year, we already had a pretty good idea of what the finalized Scion FR-S will look like. Now, our friends at Motor Trend have managed to snap a production version of the new sports car undergoing testing in Germany near the famed Nürburgring race track.

The car spotted is covered head-to-toe in camouflage, but the spot-patterned wrap doesn’t completely obscure many of the car’s details. As expected, the design has been toned down from the original FT-86 concept, but it has not lost its edge. Gone are the flared ducts on the front valance, replaced with fog lights and turn indicators, while the rear has inherited a subtle diffuser with dual exhaust ports. Both head- and taillight treatments are less aggressive and more rounded, as was the case with the concept shown at New York.

Although less revolutionary than Toyota’s original FT-86 design, we’re happy with what we can see in this pre-production vehicle. The essence of the three concepts leading to the production vehicle (the FT-86 Concept from the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, the FT-86 II Concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and the aforementioned FR-S Concept) remains largely intact. Check out all the shots of this tester over at Motor Trend.
